Early Bird Workshop: Crawl, Walk, or Run – Becoming a Highly Effective School Board (3 hours credit)
How much impact can a Highly Effective School Board have on transforming and maintaining a successful school district? What can a board do to increase their effectiveness?  Join us to learn more about some of the tools and best practices, such as strategic planning and evaluation of your superintendent, which can be used to move your district forward.

General Theme: Changes, Challenges, and Opportunities (7 hours credit)

When a district has room to grow, school boards and innovative school leadership can become the catalyst for needed changes and school improvement.  It takes a district’s board, leadership, and teachers, along with the entire school community, working together to grow the best school district and ensure successful futures for its graduates.

During the 2016 Summer Leadership Institute you will hear a mix of inspiring presentations about leadership, and success stories from school districts who have turned their local challenges into opportunities.

The strength of a team and its capacity to lead for successful change is centered on the individuals who comprise the group.  Thursday afternoon our keynote speaker, Paul Vitale, will show us significant traits that bring strength and cohesiveness to any team as he presents Inspired Teamwork and Leadership.  The traits are (1) dare to dream courageously; (2) establish a course of action; (3) empower others to imagine; (4) unite through a common bond; and (5) be resilient like none other.  Uniting for a common cause, understanding and respecting diversity, and exemplifying essential workplace skills for the next generation of leaders are all elements of his empowering and motivating presentation.

The remaining sessions will focus on new and unique programs implemented in select districts across Arkansas that are achieving great results within their schools and promoting student-focused leadership. You’ll also hear from President and CEO of the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce Randy Zook, Senator Joyce Elliott, and have the opportunity to enjoy local student performances. Take a look at the Summer Institute Agenda.

    Registration
We hope you’ll join us for both the Summer Institute and the Early Bird Workshop. Up to ten (10) hours of boardsmanship training credit can be earned. Registration and check-in will begin Thursday, June 16, at 8 a.m., and Friday, June 17, at 7:30 a.m.

The registration fee is $195 per person through June 2, and $220 after June 2. This fee includes general sessions Thursday, June 16, from 1-4 p.m.; and the networking breakfast and general sessions on Friday, June 17, from 7:30-8 a.m. and 8 a.m.-noon, respectively.

A separate fee of $75 per person covers the cost of the Early Bird Workshop: Crawl, Walk, or Run – Becoming a Highly Effective School Board, Thursday, June 16 from 9 a.m.-noon.

Cancellation requests received through June 9 will be refunded at 100 percent.  Cancellation requests received after June 9 will be refunded at 50 percent. There will be no refunds for cancellations after June 15. All requests for cancellations must be in writing to kivy@arsba.org.

Not every employee meets expectations. How should this be handled? This training outlines the legal obligations of the board, school supervisors, and administrators, and provides usable strategies for improving the work of employees whose job performance isn’t adequate—while creating adequate documentation. Board members will learn the importance and the limits of their role, and supervisors and administrators will be empowered to demand better outcomes for students.

Registration is open for ASBA’s 2017 Four-Corner Conferences. When it comes to student learning, school boards sometimes fail to appreciate the influence they wield over student achievement in their communities.

Although a board’s effect on student achievement is indirect, in districts where boards actively focus on student achievement, evidence shows that student outcomes are notable greater. The differences between low and high achieving districts are apparent regardless of factors, such as socioeconomic status, which we traditionally think of as influencing student outcomes.

Attend this training session and learn more about the specific board behaviors that are linked to student achievement. Once you discover what these are, we believe that you and your fellow board members will become better Leaders of Learning for your district.

WHEN & WHERE: The conferences will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

TRAINING HOURS: School board members will earn three (3) hours of boardsmanship training credit.

REGISTRATION: Registration is $50 and includes an evening meal. Register by clicking on the link of your preferred location above, and join us for an enjoyable and valuable learning experience!

    Keynote: Creating Future-Focused Schools

Today’s students need to be prepared for their future. Living in a rapidly evolving global economy, students need to be able to think at higher levels, employ strong literacy and analytical skills, and solve problems in unpredictable situations. There is currently a gap between what students need and what our schools provide. To be prepared for success in today’s increasingly technology-focused and information-based society, ALL students need a rigorous and relevant learning experience.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Daggett will describe how the nation’s most rapidly improving schools are proactive, rather than reactive, to the demands of new standards, tests, and teacher evaluation requirements and have created a culture to support, define, and implement innovative, rigorous learning experiences for ALL students to better prepare them for the ever-changing world.

Do you and your district employees responsible for the hands-on management and administration for absences, disability and FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) really understand the intricacies and requirements of the laws that apply? Do you/they have the skills and knowledge needed to keep from misinterpreting or unintentionally not comply with the law?

Once again ASBA staff attorney Kristen Garner will team up with Missy Duke, attorney with Cross Gunter Witherspoon and Galchus, for intensive instruction on the Family and Medical Leave Act for school district superintendents and other central office staff who handle this issue daily.

Each two-day workshop will be held in the ASBA training room at 523 South Ringo Street in Little Rock.

    • Day One: Attendees will get a comprehensive overview of the law, cover the duties and responsibilities of the employer, and the rights of the employee of FMLA. There will be a strong emphasis on the interplay with sick or other leave, leave taken for childbirth and child bonding, and the employee’s right to job restoration.
    • Day Two: The second day will take up where day one left off and go in-depth with form completion, timelines, health insurance during FMLA, administrative responses, and real-world practice scenarios.

The workshops will begin at 10 a.m. and dismiss at 1 p.m. No meals are included. Each class is limited to only 20 students and registrants must attend both days. Click on one of the dates below to register and for more information:

    1. Student Essay/Speaking Contest – contest deadline Oct. 26th

NEW THIS YEAR:  The Arkansas School Boards Association is holding a personal essay/speaking contest where 11th and 12th grade students will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 600 school board members and administrators during the ASBA Annual Conference, held December 5-7, 2018 at the Marriott Hotel and Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock.

The purpose for this contest is two-fold. First, it is designed to give Arkansas juniors and seniors an opportunity to express creative ideas and concepts, conduct research, think critically, practice public speaking skills and subsequently receive recognition for doing so. Secondly, it’s an opportunity for Annual Conference attendees to see and hear examples of the quality of young men and women the schools within our state are producing.

Three student winners will present at designated times December 6 & 7 during ASBA's Annual conference and will also receive cash prizes.

Click here for detailed contest instructions, incentives and rules. The contest deadline is Friday, October 26, 2018.

*** Please forward this information to teachers, counselors and others in your district who can pass it along to and work with students who are interested in entering the contest. ***
