Do you and your district employees responsible for the hands-on management and administration for absences, disability and FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) really understand the intricacies and requirements of the laws that apply? Do you/they have the skills and knowledge needed to keep from misinterpreting or unintentionally not complying with the law?

Once again, during the summer of 2020, Arkansas School Boards Association Staff Attorney Kristen Garner will team up with Missy Duke, Attorney with Cross Gunter Witherspoon and Galchus, for intensive instruction on the Family and Medical Leave Act for school district superintendents and other central office staff who handle this issue daily.

Each two-day workshop will be held in the ASBA training room at 523 South Ringo Street in Little Rock.

    • Day One: Attendees will get a comprehensive overview of the law, cover the duties and responsibilities of the employer, and the rights of the employee of FMLA. There will be a strong emphasis on the interplay with sick or other leave, leave taken for childbirth and child bonding, and the employee’s right to job restoration.
    • Day Two: The second day will take up where day one left off and go in-depth with form completion, timelines, health insurance during FMLA, administrative responses, and real-world practice scenarios.

The workshops will begin at 10 a.m. and dismiss at 1 p.m. No meals are included. Each class is limited to only 20 students and registrants must attend both days. The training dates for 2020 are:

    June 16-17, 2020
    July 7-8, 2020
    August 4-5, 2020

Registration will open and be announced by May 1st.

A recent survey of newer school board members in Arkansas shows that the number one thing they wish they’d known more about early in their service was school finance.  Although most attended the New Board Member Institute, they told us that this just wasn’t enough for them to feel comfortable helping to oversee the district’s finances and budget.

In response, ASBA is offering a 3-hour workshop this summer on two different dates here in our building at 523 South Ringo Street in LR.  Each session will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m.  Lunch will be provided onsite and is included in the registration fee.

Each class is limited to only 20 students. The training dates for 2020 are:

    July 28, 2020
    August 6, 2020

Registration will open and be announced by May 4th.  If you have questions, please contact Dr. Anne Butcher at abutcher@arsba.org.

The day-long New Board Member Institute with Audit Training is designed for recently elected school board members in the transition from private citizen to public official. With the increasing demand for educational excellence and fiscal accountability, the responsibilities of school boards are more complex than ever before. This institute will provide critical information and resources to help new board members become effective board members quickly.  Veteran board members and superintendents are encouraged to attend as well. It's a great opportunity for them to refresh, recharge and work with new board colleagues.

The agenda will cover such topics as the basics of board governance, the Freedom of Information Act, ethics, the roles and responsibilities of board members, fiscal oversight, and the legally required audit training for board members. Agenda available here.
