    a Virtual Workshop

Do you and your district employees who are responsible for the hands-on management and administration for absences, disability, and FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) really understand the intricacies and requirements of the laws that apply? Do you/they have the skills and knowledge needed to keep from misinterpreting or unintentionally not complying with the law? Are you aware of the new leave provisions associated with the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), including paid sick leave and expanded FMLA leave, related to COVID-19?

Arkansas School Boards Association Staff Attorney Kristen Garner will team up with Missy Duke, attorney with Cross Gunter Witherspoon and Galchus, for an intensive one-day virtual training on FMLA and applicable FFCRA impacts for school district superintendents and other central office staff who handle this issue daily. The live virtual training will be held on July 8, 2020, via Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM).

    Morning Session (8:30-11:30)
Attendees will get a comprehensive overview of the law, cover the duties and responsibilities of the employer, and the rights of the employee of FMLA. There will be a strong emphasis on the interplay with sick or other leave, leave taken for childbirth and child bonding, and the employee’s right to job restoration.

    Afternoon Session (1:00 to 3:00)
The afternoon session will take up where the morning session left off and go in-depth with form completion, timelines, health insurance during FMLA, administrative responses, and real-world practice scenarios.

Attendees must attend both sessions to receive credit for the event. The cost is $185 per person through July 1, 2020, and $205 after that date.

The class size limit is 25. Due to limits on the number of participants, there will be no refunds for cancellations after July 2, 2020. If you have registration questions, please contact Kathy Ivy at kivy@arsba.org. If you have questions about the training, please contact Dr. Anne Butcher at abutcher@arsba.org.

Please provide a current email address during registration. Registration materials, meeting ID number, and password will be emailed to you prior to the event.

Working in a school district central office comes with a unique set of challenges. And now, to add to it, COVID-19 is playing a major role in rewriting school administration. Working remotely can contribute to feelings of isolation and uncertainty.

Central office staff are called to wear multiple hats and work with competing priorities and deadlines. It can be hard to know where to turn when you have questions. What is the timeline for school board elections for your district? What rules about school board training have changed since the last legislative session? Your district received Cares Act/ESSER funds in response to COVID 19-what do you need to know?

ASBA will be offering our Administrative Professionals Workshop virtually on July 14, 2020, to help with answers for these questions and more. Topics for this one day webinar include:

    •  School board election laws with Lucas Harder, Policy Services Director, ASBA
    •  School board training rules and regulations with Jennifer Dedman, Attorney Supervisor, Arkansas Department of Education, DESE
    •  How to enter school board training in APSCN & board training carryover with Tracy Webb, Coordinator of Monitoring, Systems Support & Charter Schools, Arkansas Department of Education, DESE
    •  Cares ACT/ESSER funding with Robyn Keene, Director of Financial Services, AAEA
    •  Legal Q&A session with Lucas Harder, Policy Services Director, ASBA

The workshop will be held via Zoom from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30.   This is a day-long professional development opportunity for administrative assistants, school secretaries, bookkeepers, and others, whose job duties intersect with the work of their school board, superintendents, and other stakeholders. A detailed agenda will be coming soon.

Registration is $135 per person through July 7, 2020, and $150 after that date. Non-Member registration is $235 per person through July 7, 2020, and $250 after that date. Pre-registration is required to attend this meeting. Workshop links and materials will be sent prior to the meeting.

Requests for cancellation must be in writing to kivy@arsba.org. Cancellation requests received through July 7, 2020, will be refunded at 100 percent. Cancellation requests received after July 7th will be refunded at 50 percent. No refunds will be made for cancellations after July 13, 2020.

A recent survey of newer board members in Arkansas shows that the number one thing they wish they’d known more about early in their service was school finance.  Although most attended the New Board Member Institute, they told us that this just wasn’t enough for them to feel comfortable helping to oversee the district’s finances and budget.
