Thank a School Board Member during January

Join ASBA in celebrating School Board Member Recognition Month as we salute more than 1500 Arkansas school board members serving the children in school districts across Arkansas.

During this month-long observance, show appreciation to these elected volunteers who generously give of themselves to ensure that decisions affecting local schools are made by representatives of their own communities – people who are close to the school and know the teachers, parents, and students.

Governor Asa Hutchinson and the State Board of Education have lent their support by officially declaring the month of January as School Board Member Recognition Month.

As public elected school leaders, Arkansas school board members are empowered by state law to set policy for their district, hire and evaluate the superintendent, oversee district finances, approve the budget and determine the vision and mission of the district. In addition to their board duties, state law requires them to earn a minimum of six hours of professional development each year in areas related to their roles and responsibilities.

While a special effort is made each January to show appreciation to local school board members, we acknowledge that their work and commitment lasts throughout the year. Please help us thank these dedicated volunteers for their efforts to make a difference and their unfailing commitment to the continued success of our students now and in the future.
