Registration is open for the Arkansas School Boards Association 2013 Annual Conference. This year's theme is "Student Focused Leadership: Educating the Whole Child." The conference will be held December 11-13, 2013, at the Marriott Hotel and Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.RegistrationThe registration fee is $275 through November 19. After November 19, the registration fee is $300. The fee includes the general sessions and breakout sessions December 11-13; continental breakfast, refreshments, Exhibit Hall and the Awards Luncheon on December 12; and the breakfast buffet on December 13. There will be no refund of registration fees after December 1, 2013.Keynote SpeakerDave Gamache, presenter and busines s development director for Rachel’s Challenge Programs, is this year’s featured keynote speaker for the general session Thursday, December 12, 8:30-10 a.m. in the Marriott Ballroom. Rachel’s Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying. Dave has been working with Rachel's Challenge since 2007 traveling internationally sharing the story of 17 year-old Rachel Scott who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were different, who were picked on by others or who were new at school. David’s family has been greatly impacted by the Rachel’s Challenge message and he presents Rachel’s story with a passion and conviction that is contagious to all those who learn about Rachel through him.Early Bird WorkshopsThis year board members may choose from two pre-conference workshops. Both will be offered on Wednesday, December 11, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Each workshop registration fee is $90.
- School Finance Workshop: Do you understand your school budget? Have you considered what you need to do to avoid fiscal distress for your district? Hear from Shawn Cook, Lakeside-Hot Springs School District Superintendent, who assumed leadership of two districts after they were placed on fiscal distress.
- Board President Workshop: Board presidents will sharpen their meeting management skills by learning the parliamentary, organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to successfully serve as school board president. Jim Slaughter, a nationally certified parliamentarian, will lead this session.
