Appeals for transfers under school choice denied

July 9, 2013--Six families' requests to overturn denials of their transfer from the Forrest City School District to the Palestine-Wheatley School District under school choice were rejected yesterday by the State Board of Education. The State Board ruled it did not have authority to consider the merits of the desegregation case Forrest City cited in its exemption declaration. Act 1227 of 2013, which established the Public School Choice Act of 2013, allows school districts to declare an exemption from participation if the district is operating under a desegregation order.
