Registration is open for ASBA’s 2017 Four-Corner Conferences. When it comes to student learning, school boards sometimes fail to appreciate the influence they wield over student achievement in their communities.

Although a board’s effect on student achievement is indirect, in districts where boards actively focus on student achievement, evidence shows that student outcomes are notable greater. The differences between low and high achieving districts are apparent regardless of factors, such as socioeconomic status, which we traditionally think of as influencing student outcomes.

Attend this training session and learn more about the specific board behaviors that are linked to student achievement. Once you discover what these are, we believe that you and your fellow board members will become better Leaders of Learning for your district.

WHEN & WHERE: The conferences will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

TRAINING HOURS: School board members will earn three (3) hours of boardsmanship training credit.

REGISTRATION: Registration is $50 and includes an evening meal. Register by clicking on the link of your preferred location above, and join us for an enjoyable and valuable learning experience!

In your district, do the employees responsible for the hands-on administration for absences, disability and FMLA really have the skills and knowledge they need? This summer ASBA staff attorney Kristen Garner will team up with Missy Duke, attorney with Cross Gunter Witherspoon and Galchus, for intensive instruction on the Family and Medical Leave Act for school district superintendents and other central office staff who handle this issue daily.

There will be two levels of courses availableBasics and Advanced. You may sign up for one or both, depending upon your prior working knowledge of FMLA. Attend for two consecutive days or split the training up if you’d like to attend both, but be sure to check your skill level before registering to ensure you start with the best course for you.

    1. FMLA Basics (July 10 or July 24) assumes limited or incomplete knowledge, and will be a comprehensive overview of the law, the duties and responsibilities of the employer, and the rights of the employee of FMLA. There will be a strong emphasis on the interplay with sick or other leave, leave taken for childbirth and child bonding, and the employee’s right to job restoration.
    2. FMLA Advanced (July 11 or July 25) takes up where FMLA Basics stops, and goes in depth with form completion, timelines, health insurance during FMLA, administrative responses, and fun, real-world scenarios.

The workshops will be held in the ASBA training room at 523 South Ringo Street in Little Rock from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. No meals are included. Each class is limited to only 20 students, so click on a date below, and register soon!

    Keynote: Creating Future-Focused Schools

Today’s students need to be prepared for their future. Living in a rapidly evolving global economy, students need to be able to think at higher levels, employ strong literacy and analytical skills, and solve problems in unpredictable situations. There is currently a gap between what students need and what our schools provide. To be prepared for success in today’s increasingly technology-focused and information-based society, ALL students need a rigorous and relevant learning experience.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Daggett will describe how the nation’s most rapidly improving schools are proactive, rather than reactive, to the demands of new standards, tests, and teacher evaluation requirements and have created a culture to support, define, and implement innovative, rigorous learning experiences for ALL students to better prepare them for the ever-changing world.
