Championing excellence in public education through training, advocacy and service for local school boards

ASBA Scholarship Program

Since 1994 the ASBA Educational Foundation has awarded college scholarships to children of Arkansas school board members. The awards are based on a student's academic record and leadership potential. One award is made in each of the four congressional districts and one at-large. Click here for information on the 2010 recipients.

Scholarship eligibility is based on these criteria:

  • Applicant must be the son or daughter of a publicly elected Arkansas school board member
  • The applicant’s parent must serve on his/her local school board on Sept. 1 of the school year in which the scholarship is awarded
  • The grants will be one-time scholarships to entering freshmen at Arkansas two-year or four-year institutions of higher education
  • Each scholarship amount will be at least $600

The scholarship selection committee will evaluate applications based on:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Community involvement
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Special talents or unique endeavors
  • Future educational and career plans

Application submissions must include:

  • Completed ASBA Educational Foundation Scholarship Application Form
  • Three letters of recommendation (one each) from:
    – Teacher
    – Principal or assistant principal
    – Member of the community
  • A counselor-completed form and statement to include:
    – Student's seven-semester grade point average
    – Class standing (rank and size of class)
    – PACT/PSAT/ACT/SAT scores with state rank
    – End-of-course exam scores
    – Other pertinent information
  • Student's official transcript (seven semesters)
  • An essay of no more than 500 words written by the student expressing goals, future plans, past activities, life/educational influences and a statement about how the scholarship would help the student to achieve his/her education and goals.

The scholarship application deadline is April 1 of the year in which the student will enter college. Recipients and their parents will be recognized at the annual ASBA Conference in December.
